Worry not. The Android GPS issue has been a thorn in the flesh for many Android users for quite some time, with the causes varying from one person or device, to another. However, there are things you can do to resolve the issue as outlined below.
Fix GPS Issues On Your Android Phone
Use Assisted GPS
Your GPS needs all the help it can get to for it to deliver better and easier navigation for you. Android phones do this using Assisted GPS (AGPS) which helps determine your location.
AGPS uses GPS satellites, WiFi networks, and nearby cell towers to lock onto your phone so you need to enable the feature to make it work. To do this:
- Open Settings on your Android phone
- Tap Location & Security
- Check both Use Wireless Networks and Use GPS Satellites
Your phone uses GPS satellites only, by default, so when you add Wireless networks, it gives it an extra boost.
Reset Assisted GPS Data with GPS Status & Toolbox
AGPS alone can’t always resolve all GPS issues on your Android phone. In fact, it may sometimes try using towers or satellites that aren’t close by, making it harder to get a lock. If you still have difficulty, go to Android Market and download GPS Status & Toolbox.
The app allows you to flush and download AGPS data over again to re-acquire the right satellites. Once you download the app, take the steps below:
- Launch the app. It’ll display statistics plus a compass
- Tap Menu for more options
- Check that you have an active data connection
- Go to Manage a GPS state
- Tap Download in the new menu
- Exit the app
- Go back to Google Maps or your navigation app and try getting a lock. It should be much faster than before
The only drawback to this method is it isn’t necessarily permanent as you’d have to keep repeating to get a lock, but it’s a small concession to make to get your navigation working again.
Flash Custom ROM or Radio
If your Android phone is rooted, try to flash a new radio or ROM for a more lasting solution to the GPS issues on your Android phone. Flashing a new radio works like flashing new ROM but varies from one device to another.
