Many Sims players are looking forward to the release of the next Sims game, The Sims 5, with their wish seems to be just a dream for now. It might be due to the success of The Sims 4 that EA decided to delay The Sims 5.
The success of The Sims 4 postponed The Sims 5 production and release
A reliable source has reported that EA doesn’t plan to release another title as long as Sims 4 will be successful. The information comes from a now-deleted tweet shared by a high-ranking EA employee. A recent report showed that The Sims 4 has managed to earn at least $1 billion since the game was released.
It appears that EA’s games as a service strategy are quite successful and the publisher enjoys the money gained from the sale of additional content packs. Many gamers believe that EA is afflicted by the Rockstar “syndrome.” The profit earned from GTA 5 and GTA Online has remained quite high, and Rockstar doesn’t plan to release the new GTA 6 title for the foreseeable future.
If we look at past trends, the average lifespan of a Sims game is between four and five years. The first titles in the series were top-rated since the second game was released EA encouraged Maxis to develop and publish a rich assortment of DLCs and expansions.
The Sims 5 might come on next-gen consoles
Most fans embraced the business model, but some said that at some point EA would cut basic features which will be later released as additional content. The fear became a reality when The Sims 4 was released without pools and toddlers. The omission angered many people while the developer argued that they spent their time on an improved gameplay experience which will benefit all the players.
Another issue is represented by the fact that EA closed Maxis back in 2015. Some developers have remained at EA, as they continue to work on extra content for The Sims 4, but not on The Sims 5. A small number are working on the mobile titles while others left when the studio was shut down.
EA may be secretly working on The Sims 5 title, one that could be developed for the next generation of consoles. We can only hope that it will see the light of day.
