After the first season of the Overwatch League completed its run, we hear that the second season will be even more ambitious. There are eight more teams expected to join, meaning that there have to be some changes happening to the existing structure in order to accommodate the new guys to the league.
The official date for the start of the Overwatch League’s second season has been set for the 14th of February, 2019, on a Thursday. There will be four stages that will last five weeks each and they will all be played inside the Blizzard Arena in Los Angeles. This means that there will be 28 matches throughout the season for each of the 20 teams.
You don’t have to be concern about them burning out because they can play anywhere between 0 and a couple of matches per week. According to The League, this will come as an opportunity for the teams to meet with their fans on their home markets. The two divisions will welcome various cities.
The Pacific Division will feature Guangzhou, Vancouver, Chengdu and Hangzhou, while Toronto, Atlanta, Paris and Washington D.C. will join the Atlantic Division. The teams that will qualify for the post-season playoffs will be represented by the divisions’ winners and the following four teams from both divisions. The remaining two playoffs spots will be occupied by teams that win the play-in tournament which will take place immediately after the regular season.
Throughout the season there will be longer breaks which will include an extended rest which will take place between the 2nd and 3rd Stages, in order to accommodate the All-Star Weekend. Hopefully, this information is capable of answering at least some of the questions which you had about the format of the second season.
