Google Maps is a popular and versatile mapping program that’s used in various ways from forecasting the weather, to locating hard-to-find places and products.
It’s easy to learn how to use the app, and it’ll help you navigate different web mashups, but when you find the app not working, it may not be a happy moment after all.

How to fix Google Maps not working
Turn on Location services
If this isn’t enabled in your device, make sure you turn it on and that you allow permissions for Google Maps to use it. Go to Settings>Privacy>Location Services and turn it on. You can scroll down further and tap Google Maps and select Always or While Using the app
Restart your device
This can fix teh app when it isn’t working, so power it off using the power button or you can use Settings>General>tap Shut down.
Close and Restart the app
Sometimes a refresh works with apps, so you can close the app by pressing the Home button on your device, find the app and swipe up to close it. Once done, restart the app and see if it works again.
Turn on Background App fresh
This feature allows Google Maps to refresh its contents in the background. To do this:
- Open Settings>Google Maps
- If your device is in lower power mode, the background app refresh button will be gray. If it is green, but not working, turn it on by going to Settings>General>Background App Fresh
Turn on Airplane mode
You can turn this on for a short time and turn it back on to refresh the connections. To do this, go to Settings>Airplane mode and turn it on. Wait a few seconds and disable it.
Update Google Maps app
This can be updated via App store for ios or Google Play Store for Android, and then tap updates if it is available. If you can’t see it, then you’re using the latest version.
Reset Location & Privacy
- Go to Settings>General>Reset
- Tap Reset Location & Privacy
Reset Network settings
Open Settings>General>Reset and tap reset network settings. A network reset may help resolve the issue as it may be related to the network.
