The Samsung Galaxy Watch may have been launched back in August be we could reportedly have the very first look at a really nifty feature of its successor.
Wearable.com reported that there’s a patent filing that has been first uncovered by Patently Mobile which shows that the Korean company is currently exploring the possibility of an in-screen fingerprint scanner to help unlock a future smartwatch.

This is potentially the Galaxy Watch 2 or however they will decide to name it.
Currently, if users want to open up a device with a security wall on a Samsung smartwatch, you will have to enter a four-digit pin code.
And with most top-tier smartwatches which are now harnessing the ability to pay from the wrist, it’s pretty essential to have some kind of passcode implemented.
A potential fingerprint scanner would provide the devices that chance that if they get stolen for instance to reduce the risk of becoming completely compromised.
This goes for smartphones as well, and the in-screen technology is something that Samsung is also exploring for the next generation of its Galaxy devices.
There’s more than just security at stake here; a fingerprint scanner would offer much cleaner usability.
It’s not sure whether the tech will be implemented in a new watch
While the patent outlines the basics of such a cool feature, it doesn’t really go into too many details.
In other words, we don’t really know how successful such a device would be when prints or smudges are on the watch screen for instance.
It’s also important to remember that all the tech that’s usually featured in patents faces quite a battle before it’s able to make it to the light and into the production line eventually.
Only time will tell if Samsung will indeed use this tech for a future watch, but we have to admit that such a feature would definitely support the company in its battle with the Apple Watch and more rivals.
