The Chinese tech giant Huawei just got hit really badly. Google’s move to stop licensing its Android mobile OS to the company could affect negatively the Chinese tech giant’s ambitions to become the top player in the smartphone global industry.
CNBC just reported that the U.S. tech giant had suspended business activity with Huawei. The activity reportedly involves transferring of hardware, software, and tech services.
It was also reported by the online magazine mentioned above that Google made this move to comply with Washington’s decision to put Huawei on the Entity List.
This means that the American company will have to get a license in order to sell products to the Chinese giant.
If you’re wondering what this means for the Chinese company, well, Huawei cannot license Google’s proprietary Android OS and more services that it’s offering.
No more Google services
On the other hand, Huawei is only able to use a public version of Google’s OS via the Android Open Source Project.
This whole move also means that future Huawei phones will not have the Google services that users have come to expect on Android devices.
“We are complying with the order and reviewing the implications,” a Google spokesperson stated today.
He continued and explained, “For users of our services, Google Play and the security protections from Google Play Protect will continue to function on existing Huawei devices.”
Possible impact on consumers, evaluated
More than that, a Huawei spokesperson told CNBC that the company is “evaluating the possible impact of this U.S. government action on consumers.”
CNBC also writes that this is a massive blow to the Chinese company because it has been relying a lot on Android for the smartphones that it’s selling outside of China.
It’s interesting to note that within China, Huawei uses a modded version of Android that doesn’t come with Google apps pre-installed because the search giant’s services are blocked in the country.
