Android updates are usually a tricky thing, and for some phones it takes a lot of time until they get the latest versions. However, it appears that this is about to change. For example, non-Google devices are finally getting the Android update early on.
In the Android P beta program there were multiple devices, including many which did not belong to Google. Testers received the first versions of Android 9 Pie, and now it appears that they are the first one to get the stable update as well.
There are not many non-Pixel devices which have the latest Android version, but it is a major improvement compared to the past. The other devices which have the Pie version are the the OnePlus 6, the Essential Phone, and the Nokia 7 Plus.
Sony Xperia XZ2 and Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact get the update
We know that a stable version of Android 9 Pie is being rolled out for Sony Xperia XZ2 and Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact. We don’t know anything about the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium yet, but word has it that it will also receive the update soon enough.
The download is quite big, and you need to have more than 1 GB available. That is probably because it also comes with the latest 2018 security patch. This update changes the build number from 51.1.A.11.51 to version 52.0.A.3.27.
Upcoming updates
In the close future we should see a lot more handsets receive the Android 9 Pie update. We have received promises from multiple device manufacturers telling us that the Pie update will be available for several smartphones by the end of the year. Considering that it is already November, this means that there is not much time left to wait.
