It seems that Facebook is working at something huge these days. The platform is reportedly developing some pretty sci-fi tech that could make it possible to read your mind.
Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg reportedly detailed how they’re researching a “brain-computer interface.”
He addressed the issue during an interview with Harvard law school professor Jonathan Zittrain, according to Wired.
How would this work?
In the near future, it seems that this system “would allow users to interact with augmented reality environments using just their brain – no keyboards, touchscreens or hand gestures required,” according to the Daily Mail.
Zuckerberg’s concept would allow users to navigate menus, move objects in the AR room and type words with their brain.
They would have to wear a device on their head, something that would be similar to a shower cap.
This would pick up blood flows, brain activity and thoughts as well, according to the same online magazine.
The tech is supported by the fact that researchers already have the ability to detect when a user is thinking about something just by checking out the neural activity.
“The way that our phones work today, and all computing systems, organized around apps and tasks is fundamentally not how our brains work and how we approach the world,” Zuckerberg told Zittrain, according to Wired.
He continued and said: “That’s one of the reasons why I’m just very excited longer term about especially things like augmented reality because It’ll give us a platform that I think actually is how we think about stuff.”
Being cautious, Zuckerberg also made sure to address the ethical implications of such a thing. Of course, users would have to consent to use the product.
In a Facebook post, Zuckerberg said: “Our brains produce enough data to stream 4 HD movies every second.”
