Face ID usually stops working because of a dirty or blocked TrueDepth camera, an outdated iOS build, or a Face ID setting that no longer matches your face. Most of the time you can fix it in a few minutes without a trip to Apple.

Try these in order, from the fastest checks to the ones that take a bit more time.

Clean the TrueDepth Camera First

The TrueDepth camera lives in the notch or Dynamic Island area at the top of your screen. Wipe that strip with a clean, dry microfiber cloth, the kind you would use on eyeglasses.

Skin oil, lotion, and pocket lint build up there fast and can throw off the infrared dot projector Face ID relies on. This single step fixes Face ID failures more often than any setting change.

Check for Screen Protectors and Cases Blocking the Sensor

A thick tempered-glass screen protector, especially a cheap one, can sit slightly off from the notch and interfere with the sensor array. Remove it and test Face ID with the bare screen.

If that fixes it, buy a protector designed for your exact iPhone model with a cutout that clears the camera. Bulky cases with raised edges near the top can cause the same problem.

Update iOS to the Latest Version

Go to Settings, then General, then Software Update. Apple has shipped fixes for Face ID bugs in past point releases, so an outdated iOS version is worth ruling out early.

Back up your iPhone before updating, then restart it and test Face ID again once the update finishes.

Reset Face ID and Set It Up Again

Go to Settings, then Face ID & Passcode, enter your passcode, then tap Reset Face ID. Set it up fresh by tapping Set Up Face ID and following the on-screen circle scan.

Hold the phone at a normal arm’s length, keep your face centered in the frame, and move your head slowly through the full circle twice. Do the setup in normal room light, not near darkness or direct glare.

Check Attention and Face Settings

Under Settings, then Face ID & Passcode, look at “Require Attention for Face ID.” If you wear sunglasses often or Face ID feels inconsistent, try toggling this off, then testing again.

If you added an alternate appearance for glasses or a mask, confirm it is still enrolled under “Set Up an Alternate Appearance.” An outdated alternate appearance can cause more misses than it prevents.

When It’s a Hardware Problem

If Face ID still fails after cleaning the camera, updating iOS, and resetting the feature, the TrueDepth module itself may be damaged. This is common after a drop or a hairline crack near the top edge of the screen.

Apple Support or an authorized repair shop can run a diagnostic that confirms whether the sensor is faulty. The same troubleshoot-before-you-panic logic applies to other iPhone hardware issues, including our guide on getting water out of a charging port safely.

If you juggle Bluetooth accessories across devices too, the compatibility notes in our piece on using AirPods with Android and Samsung phones cover the same settings-first debugging. And our fix for a Windows key not working on Windows 10 and 11 follows the identical clean-then-update-then-reset checklist.

Why did Face ID suddenly stop working after an update?

Software updates occasionally reset sensor calibration or introduce a bug that affects facial recognition. Restart your iPhone, then reset Face ID under Settings, then Face ID & Passcode, and set it up again.

Can a screen protector really break Face ID?

Yes. A misaligned or thick screen protector can partially cover the TrueDepth camera or infrared emitter near the notch. Remove it and test Face ID before assuming a hardware fault.

Does Face ID stop working in the dark?

No. Face ID uses an infrared system that works in complete darkness, so low light on its own should not cause failures. If it only fails at night, check for glare on the screen or an obstruction rather than blaming the lighting.
