We all know by now that Google has been slowly trying to make some changes to its Android apps, in order to start supporting a dark mode. Throughout last year, we were able to see how certain apps, such as YouTube, Google News, Phone, Messages, Contact, the Pixel Launcher and even some parts of the Google Maps started getting a darker theme.
We will get to see a Dark Mode in Android Q
Many fans hoped that the latest operating system, Android Pie will bring us a system-wide dark mode, but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. Therefore, everyone now hopes that Android Q, the 10th version of Google’s mobile operating system will be the one to bring this much-awaited feature.
Now, based on a recent post on the Chromium bug tracker, which was made by Lukasz Zbylut, it looks like there is hope that we will see a Dark Mode in Android Q. Here is what the post reads, “Dark mode is an approved Q feature. The Q team wants to ensure that all preloaded apps support dark mode natively. In order to ship dark mode successfully, we need all UI elements to be ideally themed dark by May 2019.”
The person who made this post also emphasizes the fact that the Chrome team has to ensure that there will be a setting inside the browser to enable the dark mode and change the core UI elements in order to fit the theme. He also added that there will be a master setting under “Settings => Display => Dark Mode / NightMode” in Android Q.
When should we expect Android Q?
So far, we don’t know exactly when Android Q will be unveiled, but we could see the system-wide dark setting early this year, from the first developer preview. The public release of Q will follow later, probably sometime in the summer / autumn of this year. We’re sure more news on this will follow soon.
