In an unusual turn of events, a 20-year old Labrador City man was arrested over the weekend after he tried to drive his pickup truck up a downhill ski slope. The incident occurred just before midnight on March 16, 2014 at Labrador City’s Smokey Mountain Ski Club.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) responded to the incident after receiving a report that a truck had been seen attempting to drive up one of Smokey Mountain’s slopes. Upon arrival at the club, police quickly found the truck stuck in the snow part way up the slope. The errant driver was located nearby, arrested and charged with mischief. He was then released and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date to answer the charge.
It was not immediately clear why the man attempted to drive up the ski slope and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The Smokey Mountain Ski Club maintains 19 runs and has, according to the RNC, experienced similar incidents in the past – some of which have caused damage to the slopes. The previous incidents had involved snowmobiles, however, rather than vehicles designed for use on paved roadways. The weekend’s incident marks the first known attempt to drive a truck up one of the club’s slopes.
