Appearing as a variation of the 800 series, the new Dimensity 800U model supports simultaneous connection to two 5G networks in the sub-6Ghz band and supports cameras up to 64MP in quad-camera configuration.
Phones with Dimensity 800U chipset will be able to use FHD + screens with a refresh rate of 120Hz and play HDR10 + video content.
The list of features also includes dual Voice over New Radio technology, allowing high quality voice calls using the 5G communications infrastructure.
Compared to the 5W mmWave spectrum, 5G sub-6Ghz networks can provide better coverage and accommodate more simultaneous connections in densely populated and densely built urban agglomerations. Thus, although it offers incomplete support for 5G technology, the new MediaTek chipset can be considered a suitable solution for 5G communications, at least until the expansion of the coverage in the mmWave band will reach a satisfactory level.
Dimensity 800U, a cheaper but well-equipped 5G chipset
Dimensity 800U can be considered a rival for Snapdragon 765, Kirin 810, Exynos 980 and other chipsets with mid-level performance and features. However, MediaTek’s advantage should be the price, as the Taiwanese manufacturer has managed in the past to deliver chipsets for phones at significantly lower prices than the competition.
Based on the design of the high-end Dimenisty 1000 solution, Dimensity 800U provides an octa-core processor consisting of two high-performance Cortex-A76 cores (2.4 GHz frequency), along with six other efficient Cortex-A55 cores, running at 2 GHz. Graphic acceleration is provided with a Mali G-57 series GPU. The design also includes an “APU” co-processor, which assists in running AI algorithms, as well as efficient and fast photo processing.
