If you just got a new Android phone and want the same apps you had on the old one but without having to install them all over again, there are simple steps you can take to move apps from Android to Android.
Whether you successfully backed up your old phone or not, you need to make sure you back up the app data so you can save any game progress, and access browser data, chat history and more.
The instructions we outline below apply to Android Pie, Oreo, and Nougat, regardless of the phone brand.
The easiest method to do this is using the Android Backup and Restore feature so you can move apps from Android to Android.
Backup your old Android phone and use the restore feature on your new one. Note that you cannot restore backups from higher Android versions to devices running lower versions. So check that your old device backs up your data by doing this:
- Open Settings
- Tap System
- Select Backup (you can expand Advanced to find this setting)
- Toggle Back up to Google Drive on and tap Back up now
Once backup is complete, restore your data to the new Android phone. This works best if your new phone isn’t set up so you can restore apps and other data in the process.
If you set up your phone before restoring data, you can do a factory reset and start setup again.
To restore apps on your new Android phone:
- Follow the on-screen prompts up to the point it asks if you’d like to restore data from a different device. This makes the transition seamless, and the process varies with the phone brand, carrier or OS version.
- Select the device you want to restore the data and apps from
- Tap Copy Your Data. At this point, make sure both devices are connected to the same WiFi network
- Choose A backup from an Android phone
- Sign in to your Google account in the new device (the same account used on the old device)
- A list of backup options will appear. Pick the right one and tap Restore
- Your data and settings will be moved from your old device
- Tap Apps to pick the apps you want to move to the new Android device
The restoration process will continue, and you can always finish the set up while it works in the background.
