Unreal Tournament fans are getting some pretty sad news. Epic stopped active development of Unreal Tournament the new version of the classic shooter that was announced back in 2014.
Tim Sweeney from Epic says that this may not be the final example of Epic dipping into its back-catalog but this version of Unreal Tournament will be only playable in its current state.
“Unreal Tournament remains available in the store but isn’t actively developed,” Sweeney said in an interview with Variety.
He continued and said, “We’ve recently worked with GOG on making classic Epic Games titles available, and we’re planning to bring more of them to the store in their original glory.”
Fortnite’s success to blame
The lack of forwarding momentum on Unreal Tournament is a pretty obvious consequence of the success that Fortnite has been enjoying.
Back in September for instance, an Unreal Engine developer told the gaming community that the development was temporary on hold due to the high demands on the highly popular battle royale title.
“Many of you have been asking for an update, but there isn’t anything new to report at this time,” the developer said. “The team is working super hard on Fortnite, so there aren’t a lot of people to spare.”
Another potential consequence of Fortnite’s success
Epic also made sure to reveal another potential result of the massive success that Fornite is flaunting. There’s a brand new storefront that will definitely eclipse the industry standard with an 88/12 revenue share in favor of developers.
“Epic’s Support-A-Creator program is key to helping developers reach gamers. Content creators, such as YouTube video makers, Twitch streamers, cosplayers, community builders, and bloggers have become key influencers in gaming,” Sweeney said.
He continued and explained that “By matchmaking creators with developers, the Epic Games Store makes it easier for players to discover games, and rewards content creators for their efforts.”
