We now have the official confirmation that Sony has discontinued the last two models of PlayStation Vita. This doesn’t really come as a surprise, given the fact that the handheld game console was quite obviously not expected to last too long in this world.
The process of discontinuing the console has started long ago
This is in fact the last step of a gradual phase-out that lasted for a long time, as the process has initially started back in 2015. So in case you were still thinking about purchasing this console, unfortunately that’s not an option anymore.
The PlayStation Vita was launched at the wrong time
The PlayStation Vita was released in December 2011 in Japan and even though it had a long shelf life, it wasn’t really that successful. The console was launched at a time when tablet and phone gaming were basically taking off. This means that back then a large number of people were already able to play decent mobile games.
All of this affected the sales of the PlayStation Vita quite significantly, but it wasn’t the only thing that contributed to the downfall of the console. Later on, people also started complaining about the design of the device and especially about the fact that they needed to buy expensive memory cards. A strong competition from Nintendo also played a role in the future of Sony’s handheld console.
Will there be a sequel to the PlayStation Vita?
The Japanese company doesn’t seem to have any plans of developing a sequel to the PlayStation Vita. Given the fact that mobile games are becoming increasingly popular, Sony most likely knows that there wouldn’t be any point in creating another Vita. The tech giant has other things on its mind, especially since the next-gen PlayStation 5 is currently in the works.
