One of Google’s top priorities is to protect its users’ security.
More than a million apps, blocked from entering Play Store
The tech giant has recently unveiled that it managed to prevent more than a million Android apps from going live on the Google Play Store. They had active security issues.
In a post on the Google Security Blog, Google detailed how its Application Security Improvement Program managed to help more than 300,000 app developers fix problems with their software.
Here’s what the tech giant said:
“Over its lifetime, the program has helped more than 300,000 developers to fix more than 1,000,000 apps on Google Play. In 2018 alone, the program helped over 30,000 developers fix over 75,000 apps. The downstream effect means that those 75,000 vulnerable apps are not distributed to users with the same security issues present, which we consider a win.”
Google likens its Application Security Improvement Program to a certain routine where apps that have no known issues go through the normal tests and continued the process of getting published in the Google Play Store.
But, on the other hand, if there is an issue with an app, the tech giant will offer a diagnosis and the next required steps for the app to get back in a healthy form.
TechRadar writes that “According to the company, the program covers a broad range of issues with Android apps from security issues in certain versions of popular libraries all the way to unsafe TLS/SSL certificate validation.”
Google refuses to eliminate a controversial app from the store
In other news, Google just found itself in hot water for refusing to remove an app that is quite controversial from the Play Store.
Absher is a controversial government app from Saudi Arabia, and Google doesn’t want to pull it from the Play Store, despite the fact that it’s offending to women.
