Huawei, like Samsung, now has two mobile devices with a foldable screen on the market. However, the Chinese company preferred to work on a single design that would significantly improve rather than try new things. However, it seems that soon we could see a new Huawei folding phone, a model called “Mate V”, probably with a folding screen of the “clamshell” type. It would compete directly with both the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and the Motorola RAZR from Lenovo.
Huawei has in the past patented a phone design similar in concept to the Galaxy Fold, which may have a foldable screen on the inside, but which unfolds like a tablet. However, the name Mate V suggests something else. Here we are entering speculative territory, so this information is not confirmed and there is no unofficial information that could support it.
Since the letter V looks like a clamshell phone with a flap, the name would fit perfectly with such a phone. Samsung chose to name the second Galaxy Z Flip foldable phone, while Motorola went on the idea of nostalgia for the original RAZR series of phones in the early 2000s.
The phone could be launched in 2020
Being a product from the Mate series, it could be very close to launch. In general, Huawei is launching new P-series flagship phones in the spring, with new advanced camera systems, while keeping the Mate models with new technologies for the fall. Normally, in October or November we should see the Huawei Mate 40 series on the market, and this could be accompanied by a foldable Mate V.
Of course, it remains to be seen whether Huawei’s plans for 2020 will be in line with the launches of previous years. This year, Huawei received new bans from the US, which means that TSMC may not be able to deliver the new HiSilicon Kirin processors for the new generation of phones. Without a powerful processor to underpin the new flagship, Huawei could delay launching, or turn to partners like Qualcomm.
