The third expansion to the popular Square Enix MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers, is set to be released in summer 2019 and we expect it to come with new story content, raids and dungeons, plus gunblades and the Viera in tow. Shadowbringers follows the 2015 Heavensward and the 2017 Stormblood.
At first we were surprised when we heard the announcement made by Square Enix during the Final Fantasy XIV Fanfest, which takes places over the weekend down in Las Vegas. Naoki Yoshida, the game’s producer and director took the stage in order to deliver the details regarding the new expansion.
Shadowbringers is set to continue the Final Fantasy XIV storyline and we, the players, are expected to take up the fight against the evil Garlean Empire. The story content will be accompanied by new raids and dungeons, as it can be expected from a new expansion. Players will also be able to see the increase of the level cap from 70 to 80 once Shadowbringers launches.
We didn’t receive any specific details from Yoshida on the new characters jobs that will be released in Shadowbringers, but he did hint that one of them will be seen in the teaser trailer. The teaser trailer showcased a character wielding a gunblade which is similar to what Squall used back in Final Fantasy VIII. Also, the unnamed class that will be able to use the part-gun, part-blade weapon will most likely be in the upcoming expansion.
The fans of Final Fantasy XIV have been wishing for the addition of the Viera for a long time. Viera is the race of rabbit people that was first seen in Final Fantasy Tactics Adventure being represented by Fran in Final Fantasy XII. Although Yoshida didn’t say the words announcing the Viera, he did wear a Bugs Bunny shirt.
