Apple last night launched its new operating systems for mobile platforms and more. iOS 14, iPadOS 14, watchOS 7 and tvOS 14 are now available on compatible devices. The update also works on smartphones launched 5 years ago from the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Apple TV families, and the news for some of them are substantial. However, it may not be a good idea to install the new versions so soon after launch.
IOS releases in previous years have shown that even Apple, which controls both the software and hardware on its devices, can launch problematic OS versions. Thus, it would be best to wait a few days to see if incompatibilities are reported with various applications or if iOS 14 and other operating systems have other interface or functionality issues.
iOS 14 – probably the biggest update so far
However, iOS 14 is one of the most important updates for Apple’s mobile platform so far. It adds the long-awaited widgets, which provide shortcuts and quick app information directly to your phone’s home screen, introduces an app drawer, which now allows you to hide apps you don’t use very often, and makes many changes to the interface, such as those for Siri, or for the Maps application.
For the first time on iOS, the new version will allow you to change the default applications for email and browsing. This will allow you to set Chrome as your primary browser, where you can open links from any other application. Also, if you use a different email client than Apple, you can now set it as the main one, being recognized at the operating system level. Gmail users will definitely be happy. There are many other news in iOS 14, which we talked about when it was officially announced at WWDC 2020.

iPadOS 14 – an update dedicated to productivity
iPadOS 14, the operating system for tablets, receives almost all the functionalities from iOS 14, plus some new ones, dedicated to its mode of operation. The most important are related to compatibility with Apple Pencil, which can now be used to write directly in text boxes in applications. You won’t have to switch between a stylus and a physical or virtual keyboard to enter a site in Safari, for example. Apple is trying to improve the productivity features of iPad tablets.

watchOS 7 – sleep monitoring and hand wash detection
however, watchOS 7 is not a major update, it mainly adds the function of sleep monitoring and automatic hand washing detection. The watch will time and warn you if you have not washed your hands for at least 20 seconds. Of course, the new operating system will also introduce compatibility with the new premium Fitness + service. The clocks that lag behind this update are the Series 1 and Series 2 models, the new update being compatible only with the Series 3, 4 and 5 variants of those already launched and the new Series 6 and SE, which come with this software from the factory.
